One of the best preventative measures to take against burglary and theft is to install home security cameras on your property and in your home.
Security cameras serve to deter possible criminals as well as alerting you when someone is on your premisis or if there is any odd activity going on around your house.
They also capture definitive evidence of any breaking in or other theft and can be used to prove that certain things happened.
But how do you go about finding the right home security camera that works for you and can be installed either by you or relatively cheaply? It can be daunting, especially when you consider that there are hundreds of home security camera companies out there all trying to get you to buy their wares.
You first need to know if you want a night and day camera, a surveillance camera that will operate 24 hours a day. You can get a good camera like this for around $150.00.
Highlight the areas of your home and property that you think most need to be surveilled and possibly have a camera. Once you have an idea of this, then you might want to consult with a security expert to see what will work best for your situation.

Start a Neighborhood Watch
A neighborhood watch is one of the best ways to protect your neighborhood and your home.
Getting the community organized is effective for your home security because it creates a situation where there are many pairs of eyes constantly watching what is going on in the neighborhood.

Protect Your Home While On Vacation
Everyone has to get away every once in a while. But you want to make sure that your home is totally protected while you are away.
Here is a short checklist of things to do for your home security when you go on vacation.
Only tell the necessary people when you'll be leaving and returning.
Have someone get your mail for you as well as your newspaper.
Keep your car parked in the driveway.
If possible, keep a few lights on in your house, or have a few lights set on timers.
Make sure all of your locks are functioning.
Take your expensive jewelry to someone you trust and have them hold onto it for you. Better yet, take your most expensive possessions to a safety deposit box.

Home Security Cameras
If you have a large home or a lot of land that you live on, then it may be beneficial for you to have a wireless home security system installed in your home.
Home security cameras are a great way to catch burglars in the act, but one other thing that a wireless camera system supplies is deterring criminals from even considering compromising the security of your home.
If a would-be burglar sees a camera in front of your home or somewhere on the premises, they may be encouraged to move onto another house.

Home Security for Your Garage
You have deadbolts for your front door, extra strong locks for your windows, even a bar in the groove of your sliding glass door to make extra sure that it stays how it's supposed to be when you're away or sleeping: closed.
So you have taken home security into account on all these basic fronts--windows and doors--but what about your garage door? Often, when dealing with home security issues and trying to make their home safe and secure, people forget to consider that their garage door may be a liability.
When securing your house and possibly installing a security alarm system on your home, you definitely want to make sure your garage is secure from possible home invaders.
If you have a detached garage, then you definitely want to be doubly sure that you secure the premises. You may not hear someone breaking into your garage. If it's attached, burglars may be able to access your house through it.
Home security is essential for your house and garage.

The world's fastest alarm system
Building a home security alarm system does not have to be incredibly complicated or hugely expensive. You can build an alarm system for your home using a few things you can purchase at Radio Shack.
Watch this video of how to build a home security system that actually works in just about three minutes. Home security is all about how much effort you are willing to put in.
So, while this may be an entertaining video and while it may show you how to build a rudimentary home alarm system that actually works, you should probably consult a professional home alarm installer for a much more deluxe security system for your home.

Home Security with Motion Sensors
If a thief were to somehow sidestep your home alarms system and enter your premises it would be beneficial to have some kind of second option.
That is, something inside your house. Motion sensors are a great option. Some systems of motion sensors will trigger an alarm that will automatically call a security company that will dispatch some guards to your home.
Other systems will set off a physical alarm in a home which can be a good way to alert the members of a home and to also scare away potential burglars. There are a lot of options out there. It totally depends on the setup of your home and what type of system you are looking for.

The Complete Idiots Guide to Home Security
I've had a few conversations lately with people who are looking for good home security books. I always tell them that there are plenty of good home security websites out there that have a lot of valuable information regarding home security.
But the fact of the matter is a lot of people would rather get information from books, which makes sense.
A good book to start is with The Complete Idiots Guide to Home Security. This is a good general book about basic home security topics, with detailed sections on different aspects of protecting your home and your family.
If you've read any of these "Idiots" books, then you probably have a good general idea of what this book is like.
Another good book about home security is Think Safe: Practical Measures to Increase Security at Home, Work, and Throughout Life. You can purchase both of these books over at Amazon.com or Half.com or pick them up at your local library.
