CCTV Surveillance Systems Work
CCTV stands for closed circuit television. CCTV cameras are the cameras you see about doorways in parking lots, at the entry way of large business buildings, in liquor stores, and sometimes around houses.
CCTV systems tend to be relatively cheap in nature, making them a good alternative for home security.
With a good home security surveillance system in place you can rest assured that you will be able to protect your family in ways you couldn't before. You will be able to investigate what was going on in and around your house at certain times of the day.
There are laws about CCTV use in certain areas, so you should definitely look into that, but in and around your house should be fine. Have a look at a few CCTV systems.

Home Security and Dogs
Owning a dog can be a good means of home security. If you were a burglar, which house would you attempt to break into? A house where you hear a barking dog? Or a house without a dog?
I think the answer is obvious.
Watch this video about dogs and cats being part of a good home security system.
If you watched this movie, you can see it's a joke.
But, in all seriousness, a barking dog will always be a good crime deterrent. I'm not so sure about cats, unless a thief is allergic. By no means is a dog a complete security system in and of themselves, but they can be quite effective.

Be Safe While You Are At Home
One thing that is often overlooked it safety at home. We put in all this time and effort considering what could happen to our home while we are away on vacation or just late in the evening.
We often don't consider what could happen to us in our home, if a burglar breaks in. Often, a would-be thief will just run if they encounter a homeowner, or they will be deterred by a strong home security system. Other times, they may attack.
It totally depends on the situation.
Here is a short list of things you can do to increase your safety in your home.
1) Don't have expensive belongings prominently displayed or near windows.
2) This is an obvious one, but don't let strangers into your home.
3) Keep an eye on your trash. A lot of information can be found in your trashbags. Cancelled checks and other items that may give a thief an idea of your financial situation. This is an important aspect of home security.
4) Make sure your locks all work on all levels of your home.
One thing that I think is obvious is that you should never attempt to fight an intruder. Get yourself and your family to safety and call the police. The same goes if you come to your home and see that your house is being intruded. Leave and call the authorities.
This is by no means a definitive home security list, but at least it will get you thinking.
The most important thing you can do is to be prepared and put in the effort to protect your home and family. The more work you do, the better off you will be.

Home Security Blog
Home security is something close to home for everybody. Literally. One of the most important things to make sure your home security is up to snuff is knowledge.
You need to know what is going on in home security, how crooks are breaking into people's houses, and how to prevent these things from happening to your home.
There are several good websites that immediately spring to mind that will give you a good insight into how to improve your home security. What I look for in a good informational resource are little tidbits of information that you don't usually think about or your forget.
It is often the most obvious things like perhaps, leaving a ladder on the outside of your house or in the backyard, that can be the most detrimental and can lead to our home security being breached.
Or ideas like motion detecting lights and wireless home security systems being easily programmable by phone.
One such resource is the Home Security Blog. This is a great resource. Check it out here.

Landscaping and Home Security
Landscaping can play a crucial role in your home security effort. It can play an even more important role than a video surveillance system or a home alarm system. The reason is that a well-tended landscape can make the difference between a burglar attempting to break into your house or simply moving on to another house.
Overgrown hedges, bushes, and huge trees create ample places to hide and sneak through undetected. Trees can also be used to gain access to second story windows, which may very well be unlocked.
A front and back yard with nowhere to hide will make a thief think twice. Furthermore, if you have any kind of lighting system around your house, which you may want to consider, then you are even better off.
Lights are a thiefs enemy and are a huge deterrent in home security.
Motion detecting lights are a great option, but there are also lighting systems that can sense body heat and turn on when they go.
The effectiveness of your home security effort is based on how much time you put into thinking about the different aspects of your home's security and putting together all the bits and pieces.
Another element of your overall home security plan may be a wireless home security system.

Start a Neighborhood Watch
A neighborhood watch is one of the best ways to protect your neighborhood and your home.
Getting the community organized is effective for your home security because it creates a situation where there are many pairs of eyes constantly watching what is going on in the neighborhood.
One of the best ways to deter home robbery or theft is by having many people watching so that any suspicious activities can be reported.

Protect Your Home While On Vacation
Everyone has to get away every once in a while. But you want to make sure that your home is totally protected while you are away.
Here is a short checklist of things to do for your home security when you go on vacation.
Only tell the necessary people when you'll be leaving and returning.
Have someone get your mail for you as well as your newspaper.
Keep your car parked in the driveway.
If possible, keep a few lights on in your house, or have a few lights set on timers.
Make sure all of your locks are functioning.
Take your expensive jewelry to someone you trust and have them hold onto it for you. Better yet, take your most expensive possessions to a safety deposit box.

Home Security for Your Garage
You have deadbolts for your front door, extra strong locks for your windows, even a bar in the groove of your sliding glass door to make extra sure that it stays how it's supposed to be when you're away or sleeping: closed.
So you have taken home security into account on all these basic fronts--windows and doors--but what about your garage door? Often, when dealing with home security issues and trying to make their home safe and secure, people forget to consider that their garage door may be a liability.
When securing your house and possibly installing a security alarm system on your home, you definitely want to make sure your garage is secure from possible home invaders.
If you have a detached garage, then you definitely want to be doubly sure that you secure the premises. You may not hear someone breaking into your garage. If it's attached, burglars may be able to access your house through it.
Home security is essential for your house and garage.

Home Security with Motion Sensors
If a thief were to somehow sidestep your home alarms system and enter your premises it would be beneficial to have some kind of second option.
That is, something inside your house. Motion sensors are a great option. Some systems of motion sensors will trigger an alarm that will automatically call a security company that will dispatch some guards to your home.
Other systems will set off a physical alarm in a home which can be a good way to alert the members of a home and to also scare away potential burglars. There are a lot of options out there. It totally depends on the setup of your home and what type of system you are looking for.

The Complete Idiots Guide to Home Security
I've had a few conversations lately with people who are looking for good home security books. I always tell them that there are plenty of good home security websites out there that have a lot of valuable information regarding home security.
But the fact of the matter is a lot of people would rather get information from books, which makes sense.
A good book to start is with The Complete Idiots Guide to Home Security. This is a good general book about basic home security topics, with detailed sections on different aspects of protecting your home and your family.
If you've read any of these "Idiots" books, then you probably have a good general idea of what this book is like.
Another good book about home security is Think Safe: Practical Measures to Increase Security at Home, Work, and Throughout Life. You can purchase both of these books over at Amazon.com or Half.com or pick them up at your local library.

Wireless Security Systems
More and more people (in these high tech times) are opting for wireless security systems. And why shouldn't they? Wireless security systems are relatively easy to set up and involve far fewer wires than traditional terrestrial home security systems.

options available out there. The link goes to amazon, which has a good selection of equipment from various companies in the industry.

Home Security is About the Details
Home security is really all about the details. The nuts and bolts--literally. The tiniest details make all the difference in the world when you are trying to protect your home.A loose bolt, a shoddy lock on a window, a door that doesn't shut correctly: these are things that can either entice or deter a burglar from selecting your home as a candidate for robbery.
In matters of home security, it is well worth it to take the time to inspect your house for the minor defects that can end up costing you tons of money and the inconvenience of people breaking into your house.
The Master Lock Dual-Function Security Bar
Here are some specs on this nifty little tool:
- Strong metal telescoping pipe construction
- Weighs about 3-4 pounds
- Lots of adjustments in increments of about 1/8" or so to fit pretty well in our door
- Adjustments are easy to make without tools
- Bright white so it's easy to spot from afar as a deterrent
- The wide diameter pipe, about 1.5" also makes it easier to spot from afar
- Name brand you trust for home security products
It is basically a door jammer. Even if your lock gets busted, the door still will stay closed.
Think of it as a beefier version of the piece of wood you put in the groove of your sliding glass door as extra protection at night.
The Master Lock Security Bar is just one such affordable item (another one is a deadbolt lock) that can make all the difference in your home security.

Home Security Vacation Tips
When you go on vacation, you don't want the whole world to know about it, other than a few trusted neighbors. For your home security, the optimal solution is to have some people on your block who you know and trust watch your home for you. Before you leave for vacation there are a few other things you can do to keep any would-be burglars away.
Leave your blinds open in the same way you usually do during the day. Closed blinds during the daytime signal that you may be away.
Have your mail picked up, instead of stacking up in your mailbox or on your front porch.
Turn you phone's ringer lower in volume so it can't be heard from outside the house. The same goes for your message machine.
Stop your newspaper delivery while you're gone. Nothing says, "Hey I'm out of town," like a stack of unread newspapers on your driveway.
Use automatic timers for your lights.
Home security is important to everyone. But it's amazing how many people just do not pay attention to the small details that will deter burglars from attempting to break in to your house.

Home Security can be Random
Common Sense is Your Best Anti-Theft Device
This is a great article written by Doug Jones about simple ways to prevent theft from occurring to you and your family.
Just like other crimes, burglary can be a totally random event. However, when it's planned, there are certain things a burglar will look for when staking out a possible break-in, and there are steps the homeowner can take to minimize this risk.
This is a good checklist before leaving your home empty or for beefing up your protection against theft:
Study your house from the street, and look for any valuables that may be visible from the street. Don't give thieves a reason to show up.
Before leaving for any length of time, ensure that all windows and doors are locked, including the door to your garage. Many home invasion robberies come through garage doors and inner doors to the houses. Doors should have deadbolt locks with a one-inch throw and reinforced strike plate. Place a piece of wood or metal in the track of any sliding doors to prevent opening.
Don't leave your house in darkness when you're away. Create a sense of activity by using light timers, radios, and the tv. Install low-voltage lighting outdoors to keep your surrounding yard well lit. Install motion detectors in dark areas along the sides and back of house to alert you of any intruders.
Suspend your newspaper delivery while you're away and ask your neighbor to collect your mail for you. You may even ask them to park in your driveway while you're gone. Never leave a message on your answering machine that says you're on vacation.
Keep any shrubbery near your walkway or entrance trimmed; removing any possible hiding places. Think about planting cactus or rosebushes under windows that may be especially vulnerable. Advise your neighborhood watch that you'll be away.
Ensure your security system is activated when you leave. Etch your name on all electronic equipment to serve as a deterrent as well as assisting police in the recovery your property. It's more difficult to sell stolen property that has the owners name on it. Make a video tape of your possessions and record the serial numbers.
Get a safe, not just for your jewels, but for important paperwork as well. Identity theft is a crime that's on the rise and you want to minimize any availability to your personal records.
The more you can do to deter an intruder, the better your chances are that your home will not be chosen as a target. Studies have shown that if it takes a burglar more than four or five minutes to break into a home, they'll move on. If you increase their vulnerability by adding a well-lit area or a barking dog, that minimizes your risk again.
I hope this article is some help to you.
